Dairy Free Buttermilk?

I just read on someone's blog that to make dairy free buttermilk, add 1 Tablespoon of vinegar mixed with one cup of rice milk.
If anyone knows that this is true and/or have tested this "recipe", please let me know! This opens up a whole new world!!!!!!

UPDATE: This rumor is true with cow's milk and soy milk, but nobody that I was able to contact has tried it with rice milk- but they think there would be no reason why it wouldn't work. So, I will try new recipes this week using rice "buttermilk" and post new recipes as we go.

  1. Hi - I was looking around trying to find a margarine/butter alternative for you - what about Spectrum Naturals Organic Shortening (made from palm oil)

  2. Thanks for the suggestion! We actually use that to do all of our baking- we love it! It's a bit softer than a "normal" shortening (ie crisco) but it has worked really well for our baking. We're looking for something to add to toast, etc... if anyone has suggestions!

  3. The Earth Balance natural buttery spread is great! It is soy and dairy free and to me it tastes like butter.

  4. I do like the Earth Balance "butter". The dairy and soy free one is in the red container.

I haven't made buttermilk w/rice milk but I do make it with coconut milk and it works. The trick is that you need to wait 5 minutes before using it.
